Wild Elephant Sumac is an earthy, tangy and slightly floral spice — lemony and bright, but without the bitterness. Its beautiful crimson colour livens up almost any dish, from hummus to grilled meats.

What is Sumac?

Sumac is a popular spice used across Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cooking, made from the dried, ground berries of the Rhus coriaria shrub. It's also a key ingredient in the classic Arabic seasoning za'atar.

What does Sumac taste like?

Sumac has a tangy, citrus-like flavour similar to lemon or lime, but softer and less sharp. It adds brightness and acidity to a dish without any added moisture.

How to use Sumac

Sprinkle it over hummus, dips, salads and roasted vegetables, or use it to finish grilled meats and fish. Sumac is also great stirred into spice mixes, seasonings, marinades and rubs — and essential for homemade za'atar.

Our Wild Elephant spices come in eco-friendly, 100% recyclable tins — easy, convenient and great for long-lasting freshness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is sumac the same as za'atar?
No — sumac is a single spice, while za'atar is a blend of sumac, herbs and sesame seeds. Wild Elephant Sumac is pure sumac, perfect for making your own za'atar.
Is sumac spicy?
No. Sumac is tangy and lemony rather than hot, so it brightens a dish without adding any chilli heat.
Can I use sumac instead of lemon?
Yes. Sumac adds citrus-like acidity without extra liquid, making it ideal for rubs, dressings and finishing dishes.
How should I store it?
Keep the tin sealed in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and heat to preserve its colour, aroma and flavour.
What size is this?
This is our 100g tin — a handy everyday size for the spice rack.
